How to Find Your Niche as a Videographer

by | Oct 8, 2018

Becoming a videographer isn’t easy. Even with plenty of training and an educational background in video production, you have to remember that you’re competing with thousands of fresh graduates with the same background as you.

Because of this, it can be difficult to make a living and a career out of working in the video production industry. However, while it certainly is difficult, it isn’t necessarily impossible.

One way that you can increase your chances of standing out in this industry is by finding your own niche to specialize in as a videographer. But how exactly does one find their niche? To help you out, here are some tips that you can keep in mind to make the whole process easier for you.

Don’t rush into things

Some people think that finding their niche in the video production industry is something as simple as making the decision to choose what niche to specialize in.

It is easy to choose something that you want to specialize in, but you may find that you’re completely unsuited for that particular niche, or that you lack the skills to work on this niche on a consistent basis. You have to understand the fact that these things take some time to get right.

Work on your portfolio

If you want to specialize in a certain niche, but lack the exposure, take all the opportunities that you can to work on this niche in order to build your portfolio.

There will always be video production clients who require a videographer who can work on a niche that they need, and you should have a portfolio at the ready to show them. It is also a good opportunity to get some more experience and exposure into the niche that you’re interested in.

Respect the learning process

One thing that the media sometimes gets wrong is that when the protagonist finds the thing that they want to do, they are automatically a master at that thing. They never show the amount of work that has to be put in.

When you want to work in a niche, you have to be prepared for the amount of work that you’re going to have to put in to make sure that you succeed.

Not only that, but you’re going to have to prepare yourself for some of the failures that you’re going to have to deal with along the way. Failure will always be an integral part of success, so don’t bring yourself down if you make a mistake.

Learn from others

You can only do so much on your own, so something that you can do to improve yourself in the niche that you’re interested in is by learning from experts in the field. You can learn about different techniques, gear, and methods that you can apply yourself.

Work on your own style

While it’s great to learn from others, don’t be afraid to put your own unique spin on things. After all, why would clients choose you as the videographer of choice when there are dozens of you working on the same niche? Develop a style that really makes you stand out.
