Aerial Photography 101: Basic Drone Maintenance

by | Nov 6, 2018

If you’ve been working with aerial photography for a long time, then you know that your drone is the most important tool that you can have. After all, how can you take your stunning aerial shots without a drone to capture those shots? Your drone will be by your side throughout your career as a drone pilot and photographer, so it’s important that you do what you can to make sure that it lasts as long as it can.

Good quality drones that are used for photography and videography don’t come cheap, so you can’t exactly keep buying a new one as soon as your old one shows a few flaws. Of course, you should make sure that you don’t fly your drone into any trees or crash it if you want to make sure your drone lasts.

However, as much as possible, you want to keep an eye out for any issues with your drone before they get worse. This can be done through drone maintenance.

Visual inspection

The very first thing to do when doing general maintenance with your drone is to inspect its exterior for any signs of damage. Keep an eye out for any cracks, problems with the propellers, anything that points to the fact that your drone is less than intact.

These surface flaws are more than just a cosmetic problem. If you continue to fly your drone and shoot drone photography with a drone that shows signs of damage, it can end up getting damaged even further.

Check the batteries

The batteries of any drone play a large part in the health of your drone. Make sure that you follow the guidelines indicated in the user manual for the proper way to handle your drone’s batteries. Avoid letting your batteries come into contact with liquids or any material that might cause damage to it.

Also, avoid flying your drone in wet weather or the snow, as the weather conditions may cause problems with your battery and your drone.

Drone transportation

Your drone is a very delicate piece of technology, and if you’re going to be transporting it, you shouldn’t just shove it into any old bag. Make sure that you invest in a hard case which can be used to safely transport your drone if you’re going to be traveling with it. Make sure that you store all of its parts and accessories accordingly.

All systems go

Before you take off for your aerial photography, make sure that you hover your drone for a minute or so to warm up your drone and make sure that everything is in place. This one minute delay can mean all of the difference in maintaining your drone so that it lasts a long time.
